There are times when rejection seriously hurts. Kids who are repeatedly rejected frequently need adult help to turn the pattern around.

Don’t despair if your child is late in making friends and developing social skills. Being rejected by peers in preschool and kindergarten is certainly not an all-defining social sentence for your child. Andrew, for example, did not make friends with kids his age as a four- or five-year-old, but in first grade he blossomed and made several close friends.

The preschool years are prime play years. Sometimes a little help is all your child needs to “get into play” and be successful with peers.
